Chapter 10

We had been driving for an hour or so, when, just after a curve on the highway, we saw a hitchhiker walk on the shoulder of the road. As we neared him, I saw a large Australian flag, which appeared to have been sewn on his backpack. The young man turned when he heard the sound of a car near him and stuck his thumb out.

“He’s Australian,” I shouted. “What is he doing all the way out here?”

“I thought that was obvious,” Aziz said, looking at me and smiling.

“Let’s stop...” I said, somewhat adamant. “Stop, Aziz..., stop will you?” I was ordering him now.

“We can’t... That’s crazy...” Aziz didn’t slow down and passed the fellow without looking back.

“I am telling you... Aziz..., stop for goodness’ sake.”

Turning his head upon hearing my desperate screams, Aziz finally pulled up onto the……
