From what Mark told me later, here is a conversation he had with Fred that I found particularly interesting...

“Okay, let’s have it, Chief,” Mark said as he climbed in and sat in the passenger seat of his boss’s car. “I can understand that you’re trying to shield Talya and Khalid by sending them home, telling them that Slimane has pulled the plug, but I can’t swallow it.”

Fred turned to him and smiled. “Let’s just say that what I’ve said – or what you can’t swallow – is partly true.”

“Which part?”

“Do you mean which part wasn’t true?”

“Either. Just tell me what’s really going on here. You’re acting as if you don’t want Khalid to know what’s going on..., or am I wrong?”

“Why do you say that?”

“Because of your reluctance to talk to the man directly. When I asked you why you didn’t use ……
