I find myself walking down a long, dimly lit hallway, the air thick with tension and the feral sounds of something untamed behind a door at the end. My footsteps echo against the stone walls, each step heavier with a sense of familiarity I can’t shake. My pulse quickens, my senses tingling in anticipation.
I know this place.
The golden handle glints under the low light, and my hand hesitates as I reach for it. My heart thuds against my chest as I wrap my fingers around the cool metal and slowly pull the door open.
The scene hits me like a punch to the gut.
There, sprawled on the floor, is a woman—her hair a striking shade of purple, matted with blood. Her body lies still, too still. Panic surges through me, but before I can fully process her, my attention is drawn to the massive wolf standing over her, its hulking form casting a menacing shadow.
The wolf’s eyes—glowing, feral blue—snap to mine, and a low growl rumbles through the room. It feels like the ground beneath me is trembling. My breath catches in my throat as the wolf snarls, its lips curling back to reveal sharp, glistening fangs.
Time. Slow time. Slow it down.
I reach for my powers, willing the world to move at a crawl, but nothing happens. The familiar sensation of control over time slips through my fingers like water. A surge of panic crashes over me.
Why aren’t my powers working?
Before I can react, the wolf lunges. A blur of dark fur and gleaming blue eyes, and then the weight of its massive body crashes into me. The force sends me sprawling against the wall, my back hitting the cold surface with a painful thud. My vision blurs for a second, but when it clears, I find the wolf’s face inches from mine, its breath hot and rapid against my skin.
Its blue eyes bore into mine—wild, untamed, but oddly… familiar. There’s something in the way it looks at me, something in the intensity of its gaze that stirs a memory I can’t quite grasp.
Have I been here before?
The wolf tilts its head, as if trying to understand me. Its growl softens, and it begins to sniff in my direction. The scent of him fills the space between us—strong and unmistakable. Honey. Thick and sweet, clinging to the air like a drug. It wraps around me, intoxicating and comforting all at once.
I breathe it in, unable to stop myself. My head feels light, my body responding in ways I don’t fully understand. There’s something primal, something magnetic pulling me closer to him. And then, as I watch, the wolf begins to change.
His dark fur ripples and fades, the hulking mass of his body shrinking and reshaping into something human. I blink, stunned, as before me now stands a man—broad, powerful, his bare torso etched with hard lines of muscle. Across his chest, I see a tattoo of a wolf howling at the moon, its black ink standing out stark against his tanned skin.
I can feel the warmth of his large hands still holding me, pinning me gently but firmly against the wall. His touch is strong, yet there’s a strange tenderness in the way he holds me, his body heat seeping into mine, surrounding me in a way I’ve never experienced before. It’s overwhelming, and yet I don’t want it to end.
“Lenora.”
The sound of my name, spoken in a deep, velvety voice, sends a shiver down my spine. My body reacts before my mind can, every nerve alive, humming with a strange mix of fear and… something else. Something electric.
But I can’t bring myself to look up. I’m too scared, too unsure of what I’ll see if I do. My gaze remains locked on his chest, on the tattoo of the wolf, as if that alone is enough to ground me in the chaos swirling around us.
His grip on me tightens ever so slightly, pulling me closer, and I can feel his breath on my forehead, warm and steady.
“Look at me,” he says softly, his voice a low rumble that I feel more than hear. It vibrates through my bones, setting every part of me on edge.
But I can’t. I’m frozen in place, my heart pounding so hard I’m sure he can hear it.
Who is he? And why does he feel so familiar, like I’ve known him my whole life?
