“That’s pretty incriminating,” Daniel says, when I show him the scarf, the hat, and the gloves. They’re on me right now, keeping me warm and cosy. We’re in a coffee shop, and I should be taking them off, but I’m reluctant. He examines them like a doctor does a patient.
“Did you tell him you wanted them?” Daniel asks. “Like, did you point at them in a shop window or something?”
“No. He thinks I don’t dress appropriately for the weather.”
“Hm.”
“What?”
“And what’s he been like since?” he asks. “Awkward? Gruff?”
“No, I don’t know. I haven’t seen him. He slept all day yesterday and then rushed off to work.”
“Ah. Avoiding you. Classic.”
“Classic what?”
“I don’t know,” he frowns. “Give me a minute. It’d be easier if he were British.”
“Or American.”
