Alexandrite is a gemstone mostly known for its green color variations with a few specimens even being mauve, violet to red, and sometimes purple. It has a hardness of 8.5 which makes it popular in jewelry. It naturally grows in pegmatits which are pockets of fluid richly filled with minerals. It is also one of the few stones that changes color in different lighting.
