It had been a week since I came to the Kingdom. Except the fact that the nearness to the King made me all jumpy and nervous, everything was alright. I slept on the floor in the small room adjoining the King’s with Rahat. Rahat was a good man. He shared with me all kinds of things related to the King and the Kingdom. I had only ever met one more relative of King’s, his uncle. He was the same man I had met on the first day with a red velvet coat. His name was Kade Michael Anderson. He was also a kind man, a few times when I had passed by him he had returned my greeting in a gentle tone.
Today, Rahat has to go to the market to buy toiletries for the King so he has told me to listen to King and if anything he needs. I had been doing a fine job of keeping away from the King’s room but my plan to stay away had been dashed when a young maid had come into my room. And she had yelled at me to go to the King’s room as he was in need of his manservant.
The King hadn’t looked pleased when I had entered his chamber, he had looked like he wanted to cut me into pieces. I was ashamed to admit it, but yes I had been scared to death as I had stood in front of him and he had lectured me on duty and about the consequences of making the King angry.
I had only once peeked at the King, not having courage to look at his angry visage. That first day when I had woken up from sleep and found him standing in front of me totally nakèd, I had gotten the shock of my life.
The King wasn’t what I had assumed.
He looked young and strong, instead of old man I had thought I’d find, who’d lean on his cane to walk about. No, the King of Ice Kingdom was anything but old.
He had bright yellow eyes with brown rings in the middle.
His body had looked like a marble statue I had seen around the great hall.
And he was as big as the mountain as he stood a foot taller than me.
His voice when angry or displeased turned into a low growl. And other times, it was like a warm blanket with rich thick notes. I won’t tell anyone but when at night he talked to Rahat in that tone, his voice was the one that helped me to sleep in this foreign place and kept my nightmares at bay.
“Get going, boy.” The soldier nudged me as he passed by me, pulling me out of my thoughts.
I stood near the kitchen across from the great hall. The King had asked for hot water to be filled in the tub for him to take a bath. When I had first looked at it in his bathroom, my mouth had fallen open to see such a big tub. It almost looked like a small replica of a lake. It was made of white stone that shone in the candle light. For a moment I had wondered how it’d feel if I were to sit in it and have water all around me. I hadn’t taken a bath in a week, only washing my face. I was afraid that bathing would mean that my disguise would disappear so I stayed away from water and not that I could take a bath like the King. I had heard Rahat washing himself with water in a bucket behind the screen that was in our room. I always try to sneak away to give the old man some privacy and also because it made me uncomfortable. For him I was a boy but I knew I was a woman and I didn’t want to be close to a naked man. Especially not after how the king had laughed at my embarrassment when I had yelled in shock that he was náked.
And come to it, I didn’t want to return to King’s bathroom to fill his bathtub, the next thing I knew he’d ask me to wash him like Rahat does. And I was afraid this time I’d faint right away if I once again saw him náked.
With a dejected sigh, I entered the kitchen. The pretty maid who had offered me her seat for lunch yesterday smiled up at me. “Frost, will you like to have some biscuits?” She batted her blue eyes at me.
I noticed that the other maids in the kitchen were also looking at me. I licked my lips and said, “May be later. I’m here for the hot water for the king’s bath.”
“Oh.” The pretty maid mumbled in disappointment and then pointed to the right corner of the kitchen. “There’s the heater room, you can go in there.”
“I will help you.” Another maid said as she fell into step beside me.
I gave her a thankful smile.
Fifteen minutes later I was lugging the last bucket upstairs when a soldier collided with me. “Clodpate.” I muttered under my breath as the hot water splashed from the bucket and landed on my foot.
But even though my voice was soft, he heard me and clamped my shoulder in his harsh grip. “What did you say, silly pup?”
I winced and tried to step down, but his grip made it impossible. “You pushed me.” I said.
“I will push you again.” He threatened. “Apologize to me.”
I gritted my teeth as I said, “I won’t, it wasn’t my fault. You were whistling and coming down without paying any attention like a dunderhead.”
His face reddened as I heard a soft laugh coming from downstairs. And before I could gather what he was about, he clocked me hard. A painful gasp left my mouth and I stumbled down the stairs. My ears rang and my temple throbbed.
Strong arms grabbed me from behind and righted me, stopping my fall. “What do you think you are doing, Gale?!” Through the haze of pain, I sent a quick thanks to God above for Rahat’s solid figure behind me.
“He disrespected me.” The soldier said in an annoyed voice.
“You know who the boy is?” Rahat questioned, sounding angry. “He is my nephew. Now apologize to him before I tell the King that you have taken to bullying the weaker ones.”
I looked up at the angry soldier, he looked at me like he wanted to punch me again. But at last he bit out, “I am sorry.
I stood up straight and grabbed the bucket, now with only half of the water I had filled it with and started to go back downstairs to fill it again. But Rahat stopped me and took the bucket from me. He gave me a brown satchel as he said, “Take this to the King’s rooms. I’ll be back with the bucket.”
Ignoring the soldier who was still glaring at me I started up the stairs. My head throbbed from the punch and I wanted to sit down. I knocked on the King’s chamber door and waited for him to bid me entry. When I heard his deep voice to enter, I pushed the door open. The King stood in front of the fire in a dark blue robe. His bare feet were visible from beneath and I quickly averted my gaze. “How much time does it take to fill a tub, young one?” He questioned.
I cleared my throat and answered, “Uncle Rahat is here. He said he’d bring the last bucket over and he sent me with your things, your highness.”
Even though I kept my head down and eyes on the thick white carpet, I felt him turn around and look at me. “It was your job, wasn’t it?” He asked, steel creeping in his voice.
I swallowed. “Yes, but—”
“Turn to me and look up, boy. Let me see you when you talk to me.” I turned to him and met his eyes. And like every other time his yellow gaze unsettled me. But right now, that yellow gaze was slowly turning to icy glare. “How did you get hurt?” He growled, sounding angry.
I flinched and took a step back at how dangerous he looked. He shook his head. “Stay still.” I froze. And then I started to tremble when his eyes started to whiten in the middle like ice chips.
He came to stand in front of me. I closed my eyes as he lifted his hand but just then the door opened behind me as Rahat entered, “Apologies, your highness, for being late."
The King turned his icy glare on Rahat and demanded, “Who hurt the young one, Rahat? No one hurts children in my kingdom and this one is bleeding!”
Rahat’s wide eyes met mine and he hurried over. “Oh, why didn’t you say anything?” He asked.
“I didn’t know.” I whispered.
“See to the boy. And tell me who did this so I could punish him.” King ordered.
“No!” I said. I didn’t want anyone punished, especially not on my behalf. What if it put attention on me that I didn’t want. “Please, don’t, your highness. It was my fault.” I said, even as words tasted bitter on my tongue.
The King frowned, slowly the ice disappeared from his eyes and there remained bright yellow. “Explain.” He commanded.
I swallowed. “I was climbing stairs with a bucket of water and didn’t see the soldier coming downstairs. And I collided with him.”
The King came closer and said in a soft voice, “Never lie to me, young one.” I felt blood draining from my face as shivers scattered down my spine. He looked at Rahat and said, “Tend to the boy first, I’ll wait for my bath.”
.
Back in our room, Rahat put a salve on my injury. It was just a small cut from where the soldier’s ring had cut my skin near the temple. I looked at Rahat and said, “Please, Rahat, don't tell the King that soldier’s name. That soldier would hate me and tell his friends, who’d hate me too.”
“You know if the King got it into his mind he’d call all the soldiers and find it out himself.” Rahat said as he closed the lid of the small tin box.
“But Rahat, I don’t want anyone to know about me and it will only bring attention to me.” I pleaded.
With a thoughtful expression, Rahat looked at me from one side and then another. “Sometimes I have to blink twice to focus. And I have to wonder if you’re really what you say.” He stood up from the bed and went to put the tin box back on the shelf. “I went to my grandmother but she refused to tell me who you were and why you were here.”
I bit down on my lip as he turned. I asked, “Are you going to send me away?”
He smiled a little and shook his head. “I pledged my loyalty to the King since he was just a boy.” My brows arched up in surprise and my eyes widened. “And I know that Atelia does what she does for the welfare of the kingdom and the king, so no I’m not going to send you away.”
I felt my shoulders relax and closed my eyes as exhaustion started to catch up to me. “You can sleep for a bit while I tend to the King, Frost. Use the bed.” Rahat said.
“Thank you.” I replied.
