I felt like I wanted to cry. I didn’t think I could take any more unexpected twists and turns. George’s hands wrapped around my back, slowly rubbing up and down. I felt like it was as much to hold me in place as it was to sooth me. “Just relax, sweetheart,” he said quietly, “I’ll explain everything.”
I grunted in reply, not even sure if I wanted to hear any more.
“We live together with other people like us, kind of like a big extended family.”
I pushed against his shoulders. “I knew it! It’s a cult!”
He chuckled and nipped at my arm. “Not like a cult. More like... a tribe.”
I narrowed my eyes at him. “How many of you are there?
“About fifty adults, plus the kids.”
