For people with traumatic pasts, sometimes they would refer themselves with a third person or vantage point of view. It's a self-distancing method that is used to analyze past events without having heightened physiological reactivity. The article that I read stated that it didn't do much for emotional reactivity but the method has its own benefits and each people has a different treatment that would suit them best.
