Anne POV
I run through the forest, gaining momentum as the voices become clearer with each passing second. Others within the pack seem to think that because I am wolfless I am weak, but I can often out fight others even if they are in their wolf forms. Often in a fight I have come out on top. There is a reason why I became a master at using weapons. I may not have the strength or speed of the rest of the pack, but I have the cunning and the weapons knowledge to stand shoulder to shoulder with them and I am about to get some more live practice.
“What do we have here?” One man asks, clearly, he is a rogue from the state of his clothes.
“A nice, young she wolf. What are you doing so far from your pack?” Asks the second man, he is also clearly a rogue. I climb the nearest tree; it is thick, and sturdy so should conceal my presence from the two rogues.
“Please.” The she wolf begs, falling onto her bottom as she tries to scoot away. But the two rogues are having none of it.
Once I am high enough, I can see that it is only the two rogues that are here which will make my job a hell of a lot easier.
“I think we will have our way with you, you look just ripe for the picking to me.” Says the first rogue.
Now I have a better position, I can see that the she wolf in trouble is from our pack. She is young, maybe fifteen but I have seen her around at school a few times. She normally sits with the popular crowd; I believe her father is the old gamma.
I watch as the rogues start to stalk towards her, the breeze is hitting me in the face so my scent is not going anywhere near them.
I reach down into my jeans front pocket and pull out my folded mask. The mask is flexible and light weight but is perfect for concealing my identity. It is a little project I worked on myself, and it took a few tries to get the materials and the look right.
The mask is navy blue, with white eyes outlined in gold and the mouth outlined in silver. I never leave home without it for this exact reason, I never know when I am going to need to act but I don’t want to be caught out so I always carry my mask with me at all times.
Once I have the mask on, I then grab two arrows. That will be all that I need.
I check the wind and work out the distance between me and my targets. I want my shots to be kill shots, today I won’t let them leave here alive or even question them. They will die quickly, which is more than they deserve after what they plan to do with the she wolf.
“Please don’t.” She cries. Edging further and further back.
Before anyone can reply to her, I pull back my bow and release my arrow. The arrow sails silently through the air, strikes the rogue closest to her through the head and impales him on the tree behind him.
Before the second rogue can react, I release a second arrow which hits his heart and stakes him to the ground.
The she wolf stays where she is, shock and fear evident on her face. I roll my eyes, why do they never run when the opportunity presents itself? I think to myself.
“Leave now! And don’t look back.” I say, concealing my voice with the voice manipulator imbedded in the mask.
The she wolfs quickly gets to her feet and starts to step backwards. I can see that she is having an inner fight, but I just carry on watching her. At this point I am unsure whether she is involved or not, her next move will tell me.
I have seen it before where the victim was actually in on the attack and pretended to be a victim to pass on information, luckily I worked out quickly what was going on and was able to put an end to everyone. But ever since then, I have always watched every party carefully until I can judge whether they are a threat or not.
“Thank you, hidden hero. Thank you.” The she wolfs says, smiling into the woods before turning on her heel and running back towards the pack. I guess my gut was right and she had nothing to do with the two rogues being here on out territory.
Now for the clean-up, I think to myself a I climb back down the tree towards the two dead rogues.
I quickly grab the two arrows from their corpses, causing their bodies to slump to the ground. I then retrace my steps and remove my footprints by smudging the ground behind me. That way, I leave no trace of who I may be. I always make sure that I leave nothing behind, hence why I always count the number of arrows bullets and daggers I attack with and work out where the bullet shells land behind me.
Once I am satisfied that I have left nothing behind, I quickly spray the tree and area with scent remover and make my way back to the pack.
I walk through the line of trees and back onto the green, where I am welcomed with c*****e. There are warriors running around, trying to ascertain what happened and what is going on.
I stand there surprised to see so many people. I quickly make my way over to Gary and ask what happened? After all, I don’t want to raise suspicions about me. I have managed to stay hidden for over two years, I don’t plan on revealing my identity now.
When asked, I just say that I heard and saw nothing as I was on the other side of the trees locating some arrows that had gone astray. I can see the questions in Gary’s eyes, but he doesn’t press.
After all, I have never missed a mark.
