They rode in silence for some time, the rush of the Spine to their left, soothing, the black wall of the jungle to their right, a looming, threatening mass. Out of the corner of his eye, Bear saw a flicker of light. At first he thought it was the moon shimmering through the clouds, but then he saw more yellow pinpricks, like eyes in the jungle, dozens of them, near and far. Sometimes more yellow eyes joined the main group, which seemed to shadow them. Sometimes they disappeared altogether. Brother Marcus barked an order, and the two knights whose names Bear didn’t know peeled off from the group and stormed ahead. He watched their white robes grow dimmer and dimmer until the darkness swallowed them.

“Where are they going?”

Oliver ignored him.

“Are you familiar with the story of Captain Rhoem?”……
