Luca answered on the first ring. “Like the headlines?” he asked. I could almost see the smug look he likely had on now.
“You forged donations in my name?”
“Call it… reputation management.”
“With your money?”
“Our money,” he corrected. “The orphanage’s paperwork is flawless. Even your minister will approve.”
I pinched the bridge of my nose. He knew I had gone to see the minister. He was still watching me even after I left his house. that psycho. “I don’t want your charity.” I blurted out.
“Too late. Check your texts.”
A photo popped up: Luca at Scuola del Sole, crouching to meet a grinning girl in a wheelchair. “Thank you, Dottoressa Rossi!” read the sign behind them.
My throat tightened. “Why?”
