It seems I actually never mentioned it but the mate pull only happens once both parties are 18. So despite having known each other through Reed, Amber and Rayne only experienced the mate pull once Amber turned 18. Rayne is two years older. Do note that ruts only happen twice a year while heats can happen three to four times a year depending on the Omega's cycle.When not in heat or rut, if an Alpha and Omega have s*x, pregnancy can still occur. The chances are just much higher during a heat or rut.
