Chapter 9- Deity

Emma POV

The void between life and death is not colourful like people think, it is dark. There is no light, no sound, nothing just the feeling of sinking. To most this would be scary, but to me this is so peaceful. I feel so ashamed that as the daughter of a warrior, I was able to be beaten and overpowered so easily but the rejection caused a lot of pain to my wolf and I. And before either of us could heal, they started their abuse. It was a very smart and effective tactic, if a little callous too but still the fault lies with me for not being strong enough to withstand the pain.

The isolation was welcoming to me, the pain was gone and finally I felt free once again. Even though it was only a few months since it all started, it felt like years had passed before the end finally came for me. The only thing that hurts is that in all of the messed-up things that happened, I couldn’t even keep my child safe at the end. I would give anything for the moon goddess to of spared my child, I would even have gone into the pits of hell and suffered for all eternity, happily knowing my child was alive and safe.

All of a sudden I am pulled into a new place. This place has the vibes of a field, I find that I am now sitting in the middle of a field while being surrounded by different coloured mist. For a while it is just me and I am enjoying the feel of the grass beneath me. It has been so long since I felt grass and nature and enjoyed it that I just take my time enjoying the sensations.

I am then pulled out of my mind by a playful growling sound, and I look up to see a wolf walking towards me. I stand up and start to walk towards her, quickly closing the gap between us.

“Ruby?” I ask in shock. The wolf before me is a beautiful auburn colour, I can see why she was named Ruby. I don’t know what caused me to blurt out the name but somehow the wolf feels familiar.

“Hi Emma, it is so nice to see you again.” Ruby says, coming closer to me.

I wrap my arms around her neck and sob. “I am so sorry Ruby, you would have lived if you had not been paired with me. You poor thing, I wish you could have felt the grass beneath your paws and the sun and wind on your fur. You are so beautiful.”

“It is not your fault Emma; it is our mate and sister that did this to us. I don’t blame you.”

“But you should.”

“Why?”

The question stumps me, I have been so used to people blaming me for months that it has become a natural response. Finally I reply, “Because if it wasn’t for me then you would still be alive.”

“We were supposed to be happy.” Ruby whispers.

“What?” I ask, pulling back as Ruby sits down so we are face to face.

“Us and our mates, we were supposed to be happy. We were going to be Alpha and Luna to a flourishing pack, the moon goddess had paired us together so that we could be strong together and bring the pack into a new age. Instead Melanie changed the future for herself, Eric and us. We were going to change the world. Now you will change the world.”

“What do you mean? We are finally back together, isn’t this forever?” I ask.

“No sweetie its not. I am only here to say goodbye and thank you. The way you stood up to Eric and Melanie after they killed me made it worth it. You avenged me even without being asked to, and it surprised me that you could react that way but then that is the warrior blood in you.”

“I am just so sorry I wasn’t strong enough sooner.” I say, bowing my head as the feeling of shame returns.

“Don’t be so silly, Melanie had planned what she would do for a very long time. Eric rejecting us gave her the window she needed while we were weak enough for her to start her abuse, knowing that we would never be able to fully heal and be as strong as we were before while the bond was still active on our side. That was their plan all along.”

“I will miss you Ruby, I just hope that you will be happy here.”

“Oh I am, I get to run and play and be free. Just like you always wished for me, if it had not been for you begging the moon goddess to spare me and let me be free then I would not even be here.”

“She heard me?”

“She heard you. You begged for my happiness rather than your own, that is what made her step in and bring me here. Now I get to be by her side and make a difference in the world, like we were supposed to.”

“She couldn’t have a better wolf by her side.” I say, giving Ruby one last hug before she goes.

“Thank you, Emma. And remember, your heart is pure. I know you want vengeance, and you should get it for what they did to you, but never punish the innocent honey.”

“Never, I pledge that to you. I will never harm an innocent person.” I promise, not that I would be able to anyway, especially now that I am dead.

Ruby nods and bows her head to me, before turning and walking away back into the mist from where she came while is fall to my knees and sob my heart out.

“You have a kind heart and a strong will Emma.” Comes a sweet voice. I look around but I cannot see anyone.

“Hello? Who is there?” I call out into the mist.

“I am sorry child; I would lose my head if it wasn’t screwed on.” Out of the mist steps a woman so beautiful it hurts. She has big eyes that look like the bright blue sky and her hair is down to the floor. Her body is voluptuous, and she looks like a model who has just come off the runway.

“Who are you?” I ask in awe.

“I am the moon goddess Selena. Welcome Emma to my realm.” Selena says stepping towards me.

“Your realm? But I thought I was in the void between life and death?”

“You were, but I decided that this will not be the end to your story.”

“What do you mean?” I ask confused.

“What do you make of Ruby?” Selena asks me, clearly deviating from the topic.

“That she is pure of heart, and why she had to suffer such a cruel fate is beyond me. But she was the best wolf anyone could ask for, no matter what she stood by my side. Even when other wolves would have been begging their human to take back their mate after everything, Ruby didn’t. She stood by me and helped me through the toughest time of my life. Even only having her those few months I feel so blessed.” I reply honestly.

“Ruby is pure of heart, that is why I paired her with you.” Selena says smiling whimsically.

“How could you be so cruel to her?” I cry out, not meaning to upset the goddess but still, that news shocks me.

“Ruby knew what she was getting into, I told her the plan for you and Eric had changed and she foresaw what was going to happen, but she still agreed to be your wolf.” Selena replies.

“Thank you.” I smile.

“What for?” Now it is Selena’s turn to be confused.

“For sending Ruby to me, and to Ruby for being there. Without her I don’t know how I would have coped.”

“I think that is why she came to you, in you she saw herself.”

“So why come to me now? Why pull me from the void? Not that I’m not grateful, just surprised.” I ask.

“I have a proposal for you. You can accept or decline, the choice is yours. The world still needs you Emma, but you cannot return as a werewolf or as a human. Instead, you can only ascend. It was always planned for you to ascend but the time has come sooner than planned or we thought.”

“We?”

“Me and the other gods and goddesses.”

“What do you mean ascend?”

“When you died, it was always planned that you would become the goddess of Justice because of your pure heart. But we have decided to also give you the Goddess of Vengeance as well, meaning you would be the Goddess of Justice and Vengeance.”

“Wait, I’m sorry. What?” Ok, maybe Eric and Melanie didn’t kill me and instead I am hallucinating.

“We want you to become a Goddess. I chose you before you were born, but the others agree as they saw what you went through and how you still tried to protect your friends, brother and father. You really made an impression on them.”

“But I was just doing what I thought was right, and I do not deserve such as honour. I am sure there are many others who are more worthy to become a goddess than just me.”

“No there isn’t. there are kind people in the world, that is true. But even the kindest person has a breaking point, yet you never once broke.”

“I don’t know about that, look what I did on Melanie’s coronation day. I wouldn’t say that was particularly nice of me.” I say full of shame.

“No but they denied you even the basic of things. All you wanted was to be free and they even took your wolf from you to stop you feeling even a bit free or to have someone to talk too. That would break anyone, but instead you stood up and fought for your rights. I wouldn’t say what you did was unpleasant, it was justified.”

“Doesn’t make it right though.” I argue.

“And that right there,” Selena points at me with a wide smile, “Is exactly why you will make an excellent goddess. You don’t rush into things, you think things over and you always try to do the rights thing.”

“What about my child?” I ask forlornly, the question burning in my mind since Selena started talking to me and it finally blurts out.

Selena looks at me sadly, “I am so sorry Emma but your daughter died with your material body.”

“I was going to have a daughter?” I say,

“Yes, and she was going to be beautiful. She was going to have a happy and long life, mating for love not status and she was going to be strong. Your life was all planned out before time began, but unfortunately even something written in stone can be smashed beyond repair.” Selena explains.

I stand there and think over everything I have been told. I finally make my decision after what feels like ages. I turn to Selena. “Moon goddess, I only ask for one thing.” I say, looking at Selena with sadness and anger deep in heart.

“What is that?”

“I want revenge for what Melanie and Eric did to Ruby. I want them to pay.” I say.

“Are you sure?” Selena asks sadly.

“Yes, with everything I have I will make them pay for hurting something so pure for no reason.” The anger inside me is increasing.

Selena then surprises me by looking up and smiling before pulling me into a hug. “I knew you was the one.”

“The one?”

“To become the Goddess of Justice and Vengeance. You only want those who have hurt you so bad because they caused you and Ruby pain beyond belief. I can’t lie saying that to hear those words doesn’t hurt me, because it does. But at the same time, I understand and, I think it is only a fair request.” Selena says.

I am shocked, the moon goddess has actually listened to me and she backs what I have asked for.

What the hell?
