Chapter 15
A thick stand of evergreens stood between the highway and Adam's family's house on the lake, so thick I couldn't even see the house from the tiny bit of driveway we could pull into before having to stop at a gate. Andrew's car was in front of me, and I saw him press a button on a talk box, but it was Tlalli who leaned over him from the backseat to speak to whoever was on the other end.
"I wonder what she's saying," I said to Loke.
"She's your friend," he said.
"Not really," I admitted. "I've only met her a couple of times. She's quite a bit younger than Jesús, and he and I never really hung out besides at work, anyway. I mean, we both worked a lot of hours, usually together. But I don't know her well at all."
"I like her," Loke said as if that settled the matter.
