The book is part of a series called "Voyages Extraordinaires (Extraordinary Journeys)." The idea of France and the entire globe being attacked by a super-weapon (what would now be called a weapon of mass destruction) is repeated in "The Begum's Millions," which Verne published in 1879, and the menace is finally averted through the force of French patriotism. It is one of the earliest works to deal with issues that would become crucial in World War II and the Cold War half a century after its release.
